Reading about Faraday father of electricity. First electric motor VERY unimpressive, but 1--he was encouraged by his version of total depravity to continue to expound theories, even though some would prove wrong. Also, he was 2--encouraged to test everything, exhaustively, by his view of a good God and Creation. Preach that. Find a few--there are surely unimpressive beginnings to encourage. Points 1 and 2 above.
Incidentally, when Prime Minister Rober (Bobby) Peel visited him and asked 'What good is it?' Farady is reported to reply 'I don't knw, but you'll tax it'.
