What is the root?

What is the root?  This is a good question, coming from ANYONE.  What say you?

There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.

Possibilities:  1--The trend must be reversed.  By He Who Reverses The Trend.
2--Most 'money' is guilt/debt money, like the indulgences Luther fought against.
3--We should have something outside ourselves, such that we can see ourselves in context.  (Phenomenology: A man sees a squirrel out the window.  He brackets that and sees himself seeing the squirrel out the window. Continue bracketing)

4--STR might say, the non-aggression principle is the root.
5--Buddhists would say: The 4 Noble Truths and the Eight-fold Path.
6--Peace is the explicit reconciliation of opposites: ERH

What say you?
